AP Physics 1 · Linear Momentum
In an elastic collision between two objects of equal mass, where one is initially at rest, what happens to their velocities after the collision (in one dimension)?
- the moving object stops, and the initially stationary object moves off with the first object's original velocity
- the objects bounce back with reversed velocities
- both objects move off with half the original velocity
- the objects stick together
This is a special result of elastic collisions between equal masses, where velocities are effectively exchanged.
AP Physics 1 · Work, Energy, and Power
A ball is dropped and falls freely (ignoring air resistance). As it falls, its kinetic energy:
- increases while its potential energy decreases by the same amount
- decreases while its potential energy increases
- increases while its potential energy also increases
- stays constant
Total mechanical energy is conserved: as height (and PE) decreases, KE increases correspondingly.
AP Physics 1 · Fluids
A 2 kg object appears to weigh 15 N when fully submerged in water (g = 10 m/s²). What is the buoyant force acting on it?
Actual weight = mg = 2 × 10 = 20 N. Apparent weight = actual weight − buoyant force, so buoyant force = 20 − 15 = 5 N.
