At the boundary between soft tissue and bone, a large fraction of the ultrasound is reflected because:
- ultrasound cannot travel through bone
- there is a large difference in acoustic impedance between the two
- bone absorbs all ultrasound
- the two have identical impedances
Bone has a much higher acoustic impedance than soft tissue. The large difference (Z2 - Z1) makes the reflection coefficient large, which is why bones show up clearly on an ultrasound scan.

In Fleming's left-hand rule for the motor effect, the thumb represents:
- the magnetic field
- the induced e.m.f.
- the force (motion) on the conductor
- the current
First finger = Field, seCond finger = Current, thuMb = Motion (the force). The left hand is used because it applies to the force on a current (conventional current direction).
A Level Physics (9702) · Magnetic Fields
The force on a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field is zero when the conductor is:
- at 45 degrees to the field
- parallel to the field
- perpendicular to the field
- carrying a large current
F = BIL sin(theta). When the current is parallel to the field, theta = 0, sin(theta) = 0, and the force is zero.
